how to play

Rules

  1. Tell the players the following:

    • I will call out a string number and then a fret number

    • The first person to play the correct note wins that round

    • You are only allowed to play one note once

    • If you play more than one note you will be disqualified for that round

    • The first to win three rounds calls out "BINGO" and wins the game

    • There is no talking during this game

    • If you call out, “It was me!” you will be disqualified from that round, even if you are correct.

  2. First call out the string number by saying, "The first position is, string (string number)..."

  3. Then play a note to yourself and remember the sound of the note and which fret it was on.

  4. Now call out the fret number, "Fret (fret number)."

  5. Listen very carefully to see who played the correct note first and call out that player's name as the winner of that round.

  6. If several players are first or it was to hard to tell, call it a draw, no winner that round.

  7. Play until someone wins three rounds and calls out, "BINGO!" and announce them as the winner.

Tips

  • Players should hold there finger over fret five string four as a neutral starting position. This way they can easily get their finger and thumb onto the correct string when it is called out by moving up our down the necessary number of strings and then shifting up or down the right number of frets to play the correct note.

  • Use the fretboards dot markers to memorise the fret positions. On most guitars they represent 3,5,7,9,12.

Learning Outcomes

This game has three main outcomes:

  • Improves student ability to locate a note on the guitar fretboard by string and fret number.

  • Increases student speed in moving around the guitar fretboard.

  • Helps a student with reading guitar tablature.
