our story

Fretvision began in 2005 with Jake Lang, teaching from his home studio. Within a few years he had to upgrade to a more larger premises and hire staff to help with the growing number of students. By 2009, Fretvision began teaching in primary schools, colleges, and school holiday programs for YMCA. What started as one guitarist's dream is now a vibrant team of Canberra musicians sharing their expert knowledge and love of music.

We believe that students and teachers can support each other to enrich their lives and create an engaged community, and that an engaged community can in turn help us all lead more fulfilling and meaningful lives. That’s why we work hard to provide the best music tuition to schools anywhere in Canberra.

LESSONS

MISSED LESSONS

We require at least 24hrs notice to cancel a lesson for any reason. Less notice will result in loss of the lesson.

To cancel a lesson, there is a button on the email reminder you will have received for the lesson. It gives you the option to cancel or reschedule the lesson.

Notice can also be sent via email, text message or phone. If you get an answering machine, just leave us a message, we check it daily.

RESCHEDULING LESSONS

Lessons can be rescheduled to another class being offered at your school. This means that if your child misses a lesson one week, they will attend two lessons the following week.

Where class has been cancelled due to public holiday or school event, a one off make-up lesson will be schedule on an alternative day or the following week.

CREDITING MISSED LESSONS

In the event that you are unable to schedule or attend a makeup for lessons missed during the term, you may be eligible to have their value credited toward your future payments. Apply for lesson credit...

TERMINATING LESSONS

You are able to terminate lessons at any time, you are not locked into a term period.

Two weeks notice, where possible, is all that we ask before terminating.

In order to give notice and terminate lessons, use the Lessons Termination Form.

FEES

PAYING TUITION FEES

All fees are paid by direct debit through Ezypay.

Payments are always billed on a Friday two weeks in advance of scheduled lessons.

Each term, you will be billed for 10 lessons (valued at $24 each) over a 12 week period, that's 6 fortnightly payments of $40 equalling a total of $240 per term.

Payments will stop for four weeks after Term 4 and begin again during the last two weeks of school holidays before Term 1.

Failed payments due to insufficient funds will incur a $8.95 penalty and be re-billed the following Friday. To avoid this happening, we send a text message reminder before each payment. You can opt out of this text message by replying STOP. If a payment does fails, please get in contact with us before the rebill to avoid paying the failed payment fee.

There are no other additional fees or charges. You may read about additional fees or charges in EZYPAY's terms and conditions, you won't ever pay any of these, we have absorbed them for you.

To set up payments, go to our Pricing Page.

PRACTICE

PRACTICING

Practicing between lessons is encouraged.

Of course, your child will progress faster the more they practice.

Children often won’t practice, this is normal and to be expected. Research shows that just the weekly lesson alone is enough to make permanent positive changes in a child’s brain that will last a lifetime.

We find it takes time for a child to discover the joy of music for themselves but when they do, they begin to consistently practice without being asked.

PRACTICE TIME

For kids between Year 1 and Year 3, we recommend 30 minutes a week.

For kids in Year 4 to 6, we recommend at least an hour per week.

For high school students, we expect between two to five hours per week.

Students of any age, as they become more competent and dedicated, should aim to increase practice to an hour or two each day. Some of the greatest musicians practice for over eight hours a day!

For effective practice, have a set daily routine that focuses on one aspect of your playing each day, for five days a week.

PARENT PARTICIPATION

Parent participation is an important factor in getting kids practicing.

Nagging or turning practice into a regular chore isn't generally very helpful.

Being interested in what your child is working on and what they have achieved is helpful. We provide a homework sheet each lesson to help set and log each students practice for the week.

Here are some other ways you can encourage your child to practice:

  • Listen to music together.

  • Watch live music performances.

  • Play music games. Click here for more info.

  • Jam together or have sing along.

For a detailed explanation of how you can help your child practice, check out these pages:

EQUIPMENT

INSTRUMENT UPKEEP

Students are expected to keep their instruments in working order while participating in lessons.

Guitars require a regular string change (every 6-12 months).

We can restring or repair your guitar if needed, for $50 (strings included).

REQUIRED EQUIPMENT

All students are required to own or hire an instrument.

A music stand is highly recommend. Having no set place for a student put their music can make practice a lot more difficult.

We also recommend a guitar stand so that the guitar is kept out of its case at home. This makes it much easier to practice anytime your child gets the urge, rather than facing the task of getting it out and having to put it back in its case each time they practice.

INSTRUMENT HIRE

Guitars and keyboards are hired out at $5 per week for any length of time.

This fee will be added to your fortnightly direct debit amount.

There are no contact periods.

There is no deposit required. We trust our students to take good care of their instrument.

If their guitar does happen to get damaged, lost or stolen there is a $50 replacement fee.
